Avens is a safe and caring community for NWT seniors who want to choose how and where they live. Avens is committed to providing high-quality services—including affordable housing and the delivery of long-term care—that allow their residents to stay in Yellowknife and age well with respect and dignity.
Avens wanted a platform where they could post current openings in their community and make it easy for seniors as well as volunteers to apply online. The challenge was Avens had not updated its brand in over a decade. Their logo format had never been consistent, and their website was full of bugs, out-of-date content, and was not mobile responsive.
We started by updating the brand. This included tweaking the colour palette to reflect current trends in web design, and giving the logo a contemporary look while keeping its original shape and mountain aven flower icon.
Then, we completely overhauled their website, which had been patched together over the years on Wordpress. The new website was designed with large typography and simple information architecture to make it more intuitive for older people with limited technology skills. A custom job board was built where Avens can post current open positions with an online volunteer application form. This allows people to easily apply for an open position—upload their resumes and cover letters—and send directly to the HR department.
Many users were likely to visit the site on their handheld devices. So, following our usual principles we ensured nothing was sacrificed, whatever the screen size.
