How Avens made it easier to serve NWT seniors

MBDC refreshed Avens' brand and rebuilt its website for NWT seniors, with a clearer logo, large type and a custom job board that makes applying simple.

Challenge

Avens is a safe and caring community for seniors in the Northwest Territories, providing affordable housing and long-term care so residents can stay in Yellowknife and age well, with respect and dignity. It needed somewhere to post job openings and let seniors and volunteers apply online. Two things stood in the way. The brand hadn’t been touched in over a decade and the logo had never been used the same way twice. And the website was full of bugs, out of date, and unusable on a phone.

Solution

We started with the brand, adjusting the colour palette and giving the logo a contemporary look while keeping its original shape and the mountain aven flower at its centre. Then we rebuilt the website, which had been patched together over the years. The new design leans on large typography and a simple structure, because the people who need it most are often the least comfortable with technology. We also built a custom job board where Avens can post openings alongside a volunteer application form, so applicants upload a resume and cover letter and it lands straight with HR.

Results

Avens now has one logo, used one way, and a website that works on the phone in a senior’s pocket. Openings can go up the day they open, applications arrive complete, and the team spends its time on residents rather than on a website that fought back.
